The work of Louise Pasteur is responsible, more than other factor for the great strides made in medical science in conquering diseases after his time. He proved that infectious diseases are caused by germs. Pasteur was born in France. He studied Chemistry at school in Paris and at the Sorbonne. In 1867, he became professor of Chemistry in the Sorbonne. In the 1850s his study of living things began. Out of his experiments came ideas which he developed into valuable contributions to the health and well-being of humanity.
When the silkworm farmers of southern France found their silkworms dying, they asked for Pasteur's help. After making a number of tests, he found parasites on the silkworms. He taught the farmers how to overcome the successfully and Pasteur was praised for having saved the silk industry. Pasteur showed how disease in animals such as cholera could be prevented and cured.
The pasteurization of milk is a process by which the growth of germs in the milk is stopped. This has proved of untold value in saving the lives of many children. This process too was originated by Pasteur. In honour of his life work, the Pasteur Institute was founded in Paris by the French government.
